Is there a way to insert a clockwise (and a counter-clockwise) symbol in Writer?
You mean the following symbols?
⥁ (Clockwise close circle arrow U+2941)
⥀ (Anticlockwise close circle arrow U+2940)
You need a font that includes that symbol and then just use the “insert special character” menu, or type the Unicode codes and then press Alt
X
to convert that code into the actual character. You can use the Unicode Character Table to search for the right codes of other variants.

If you use the Alt + X shortcut, LO will try to search among the installed fonts and take the glyph from one of them even if the currently used font does not include it.
I am very grateful for a swift response but am too rushed to follow it up properly at the moment (ie, by experimenting with your instructions).
The actual symbols I was wanting are a little clearer than these appear above on my screen now. In the version I am aiming for the circle is open from about the 5 o’clock to 7 o’clock positions, and there is a downward arrow on the clockwise one at 5 o’clock and on the anticlockwise one at 7 o’clock.
I am guessing that if I opened the link you mention I might find the versions I want.
But I shall have to delay pursuing it all for a while –– till this evening perhaps.
Thank you again.
PS This is my first time on this forum. I hope I am following the procedure properly.
