I like autocomplete in many ways, but I find it annoying when I hit <4> to enter an item number and then fill in the item name, and find it’s entered a phone number in the item number field. Can I exclude numbers from autocomplete?

Okay, there is a solution, but it means changing your spreadsheet a little. Make a backup before trying.
You need to convert your phone numbers to real numbers, and use cell formatting to format those numbers according to your local customs. For example, in the US don’t enter:
999-456-1234
instead enter
9994561234
but have cell formatting set to
000-000-0000
under Format>Cells…>Numbers (tab)>Number (Category list)>Format Code (entry field)
