Can I use TurningPoint clickers with LibreOffice?

We have been trying to use LibreOffice in our school and do away with Microsoft Office. However, one of the key features that staff would like to have is using the TurningPoint feature within Microsoft Powerpoint to use “clickers”. If there is no way to use the clickers with LibreOffice then we may abandon the use of LibreOffice and go back to Microsoft Office just for that feature.

Any suggestions on whether there is a workaround or update being considered by LibreOffice?

@Digger1 – Any update here from the company?

This German manufacturer sells a presenter that is explicitly for OpenOffice, too.

properties:

3-button laser pointer in a handy pen-sized format
Control your PowerPoint® and Open Office® presentations from up to 10m
away
Easy to install and use thanks to USB Plug&Play functionality

I think it’s safe to assume that if it works with OpenOffice, it will work with LibreOffice, too.

Can you explain what is the TurningPoint feature?

Link above does not appear to be working. Perhaps this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbccc2PcOVU

drone27of1, the above link works for http://www.turningtechnologies.com/ information about the polling software that is compatible with Microsoft PowerPoint… Their homepage will get you all the information about the product(s) that we will miss if we stay with LibreOffice.

Seems foolish to spend $ just to have Microsoft PowerPoint because of the functionality needs of our schools. If we need to purchase Microsoft, then we would potentially abandon LibreOffice completely on all of our 400+ systems…

Ask to turningtechnologies if there is an extension for LibreOffice/OpenOffice.

@mariosv - Already inquired…waiting on response.

Hi @Digger1,

Turning Technologies has a bunch of different hardware devices listed here: http://www.turningtechnologies.com/response-solutions/responsecard-ir

Was there a particular piece of hardware that you wanted to use?

Regarding classroom clickers in general, based on a quick googling, I can’t seem to find any company that makes hardware/software that supports LibreOffice or OpenOffice (which seems strange to me). Perhaps someone should sit down and make some

Update: Here’s an interesting page about an Open Source Hardware project to generate ‘smart data’ for the Open Data Kit: http://www.sanitationhackathon.org/open-data-kit-smart-clicker
