Cannot drag formula from one cell to the next in Calc

I have been using Excel for many years but this is not working in Calc. What am I missing? I have searched this topic and not found an answer for this simplest operation.

Spreadsheet Drag&Drop

That looks like what I would likely get on Excel 2010 and 2019 too. I can’t move the formula to the next cell by dragging from the centre in Excel either.
Dragging from the corner (same as Excel) seems to work for you except there is a problem with your formula. Do you need to lock the row (cycle with F4 key same as Excel) with $?

Thank you. My .gif does not show it well, but I am trying to replicate the method in Excel. That is to start with the cursor arrow point at the edge of the cell and drag it.

That has never been necessary in Excel. I want to move (absolute; not relative) the formula from one cell to the next. Grabbing by its edge normally works in Excel. Of course this is not a “:show stopper.” I was able to copy the contents via the top edit bar (maybe I am calling it the wrong thing) from one cell to the next and then clear it from the first one. But this seems like it should be unnecessary and I am trying to see what I am doing wrong.

I just tried the F4 Key…I had not been aware of that shortcut for absolute cell address…but it does not do as desired when dragging; giving me still the same result.

OK, I understand now. For a single cell you need to select the cell so starting in the middle of the cell drag to a neighbouring cell then back so only the original cell is selected, release and grab again, now you can drag the range.

For more than one cell that you want to move, you have already selected the range so you can just drag.

I am confused…I have gotten this to work maybe 20% of the time. I do not understand what I am doing differently. Is this explained anywhere in better detail? Such as:

  1. Place cursor in middle of cell
  2. Depress and hold mouse button
  3. Drag to destination cell
  4. Release mouse button.

For single cell

  1. Select cell and neighbouring cell and still holding mouse drag back so only original cell is selected (range of one cell is actually selected)

  2. Click mouse and hold and drag range to where you want it

For multiple cells

  1. Select the range

  2. Click mouse and hold and drag range to where you want it

You should see a square box cursor as you drag

Thanks a lot. I think I am getting it now.

All left click. Yellow dot shows left click

Got it. Thanks!

I have now tried multiple cells. It seems like the method was originally targeted at multiple cells; initially dragging back and forth takes the selection from 2 cells back to one?

So I now can do it with single and with multiple cells. Thanks again. I will now return to my cell. :grinning:
