Cannot open Document Spreadsheet

Hello,
Some of my Document Spreadsheet files have somehow been converted to BAK and Adobe Acrobat format. I cannot open and when ask LibreOfiice to repair, the response is that it cannot. These are budget which I’d hate to have to recreate. What are my options?
Thank you.

You haven’t given much information at all about your system, software, what you have done, how you normally file files, etc
If you are on Windows and just save without thinking then your files are probably in your Documents folder, look manually through that. Windows Search does not search for .odt files; I assume for reasons related to Microsoft lock-in. That can be changed, see this OpeOffice article. I use a program called Everything to search, it looks only at file names, not contents, so is very light and fast.

BAK
If set to do so, .bak is the extension LibreOffice uses when it creates a backup.

  • The setting for this is in Tools > Options > Load/Save > General see help Saving Documents Automatically . Note the ephemeral nature of these, it is the result of the previous save.
  • The path to the backup folder is shown in Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Paths
  • If you Copy a *.bak file to another folder, open LibreOffice and open the file from within LibreOffice you can Save As a proper .ods file.

Adobe Acrobat
There are some possibles here

  1. the file has extension .ods
    1. You have associated .ods Calc files with Abode Acrobat so that program tries and fails to open them.
    2. Open LibreOffice, click File > Open, navigate to and select your file and click Open.
    3. learn how to associate files with the desired program in your (unknown) operating system.
  2. Do you mean it has extension .pdf?
    1. The file opens in Adobe Acrobat and you can see your data. maybe it has been exported to pdf but isn’t the spreadsheet file which is elsewhere.
    2. Maybe it is a hybrid pdf? Open LibreOffice and click File > Open, navigate to and select your file and click Open. If it opens in Calc then it is a hybrid pdf which also contains an editable version of your spreadsheet. Save As .ods
