Cannot Open Writer

I’m a recent convert to LibreOffice. According to Calc, which I run daily, the version is
24.2.2.2 which I run on Windows 11.

Today is the first time I’ve tried to load and use Writer. I cannot get it to open. I select it using the search function in the task bar. The little circling icon appears then disappears after a time; however, the app never loads. It doesn’t appear in the task bar - as does Calc when I load it - nor does it appear in Task Manager after the spinning icon stops appearing. Task Manager does show “LibreOffice (2)”, but only Calc is running according to my task bar. I’m pretty sure that I installed all of LibreOffice without customization; so I’m confused as to why Writer won’t open when it appears in the search function list.

Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

First, restart Windows: click Start menu - Power - Restart (not shut down, the default for that is hibernate)

After Windows has restarted, does LibreOffice writer start? If not, then click Start menu - More apps - LibreOffice 24.2 - LibreOffice (Safe mode) - Continue in Safe mode. Does LibreOffice open and work correctly?

  • If not, then open Control Panel - Programs and Features, right click LibreOffice and select Repair.
If it still doesn’t open then you will need to add LibreOffice (C:\Program Files\LibreOffice\program\soffice.bin) to the Allowed list of your anti virus program.
  • If LibreOffice opens and works correctly then it might be a graphics issue or a problem with extensions.
    • Click Start menu - More apps - LibreOffice 24.2 - LibreOffice (Safe mode) and under Configue tick the box Disable hardware acceleration then click button Apply changes and restart
    • If LibreOffice starts OK then click Tools > Options > LibreOffice > View and tick the box Force Skia software rendering, OK.
    • If still an issue you could untick Use Skia for all rendering after going into Safe Mode again, or Disable all extensions and then enable them one-by one.

Thank you for the response. Restarting was the solution. After doing so Writer loaded without problem.

I always shut down Windows at the end of the day. I turned off Fast start-up so that Windows would shut down properly and not just hibernate. With modern SSD drives there is not much difference in time between full boot and wake from hibernation.

If you want to turn off fast start-up in Windows, go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options\System Settings, click the link Change settings that are currently unavailable and then untick Turn on fast start-up (recommended)
