@daviddowd: you have to “accept” the answer by clicking on the gray check mark below the up and down arrows to the left of the answer. The person who asked the question, should accept the answer and doesn’t have to close the question. Other people with enough karma can also accept an answer, they have to close the question to show that the answer was accepted by them and not by the one who asked the question in the first place.

probably you inadvertently activated Track Changes mode (CTRl+SHIFT+C). To disable:
- Deactivate option
Edit -> Track Changes -> [ ] Record( or typeCTRl+SHIFT+C) - Accept all recent changes through
Edit -> Track Changes -> Accept All
