Exporting from browser an html table as .XLS file Excel open it with no problem while libreoffice crashes.
I can submit to u the .xls file to test. (I have LO 4.1.0.4) (i couldnt do it coz it says karma > 3!)

I think this is a bug in 4.1 see FDO#67699.
As workaround change the file extension to html and import in calc through Menu/Insert/File or Sheet from File or link to external data.
The FDO#67699 apears to be the problem im having.

I tested on XP/SP3 unsing Libo 4.0.4.2 and consider the file as opening correctly. Please screenshots, which I created from the original xls-file.
The bug is a regression in 4.1 version, so while it is not solved, perhaps better stay with 4.0.4
Hope the “regression” becomes a “progression” soon. im not up to uninstall 4.1 and install again 4.0.4 on 200 pcs, some on remote slow links. Thx.
I can confirm that the file is correctly imported by LibreOffice Calc 4.0.4.2 in Ubuntu 12.04 (from PPA):
