Can't open big xls file on calc 3.6.5.2

Hi all,

First of all: I’m new here on the forum. I am appointed to become the LibreOffice expert of my company VanBoxtel in Holland.
The first problem I received was the following:
A xls-file of 10,6 mb was created by our software. However when trying to open this file with calc (3.6.5.2), I got a general I/O error.

I tried to upload the file but I guess it’s too big? The upload does not complete…

We resolved the problem by converting the XLS to XLSX, but I would still like to know why the error occured in the first place.

Thank you in advance!
Greetings,
Bart

What is your operating system name and version?

Specific suggestions:

  1. It can be several different problems (like using shared network disk, file does not exists, etc). Have you searched the web? See the following: http://www.google.com/#q=libreoffice+general+i%2Fo+error
  2. If you are using a network shared disk file, copy it to your local computer. Open it? Helps?
  3. Create small file with your company program and try to open it? Is the size of file really a problem?
  4. Are you sure your company program is creating correct file? It may be somehow corrupted, but in a way that Excel can open it but LibreOffice Calc can’t.

    General suggestions:
  5. Do you really need old LibreOffice version? If not I suggest you to upgrade to new stable version 4.1.4: https://www.libreoffice.org/download Version 4.1 is now “enterprise ready” - that means major problems fixed.
  6. If still can’t fix the problem, then reporting a bug is one of the options: https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/bug/ But do NOT report a bug for 3.6 version, because this version is at end of live: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan#End_of_Life_Releases - so first upgrade to 4.1 and if problem not solved report a bug against 4.1 version.
  7. If you are planning to use LibreOffice, then consider of using ODS file type instead of XLS. ODS is better supported in LibreOffice.
  8. I am wondering if you are using big files, that maybe the concept of what are you doing may be questioned. Why is the file so big? Is it using some pictures/images? Is the file full of data like ten-thousands of rows? Maybe you need database software? Like LibreOffice Draw (or any other software PostreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB,…)
  9. If you are planning to use LibreOffice in enterprise I strongly suggest to read the following thread and links provided in the following thread: LibO for enterprise Specially providing yourself with level-3 support is good idea, because investing little bit of a money can save you a lot of time/money: https://www.documentfoundation.org/supporters/
  10. If you are the one to become “the LibreOffice expert” I also strongly suggest to read some free to use manuals: https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/documentation/ and read threads on other related forums:

I gave you more questions then answers, but I hope some of them are useful to you.

@L-user - Excellent suggestions!

My largest xls-file is only 3.5 MB and has been created in native MS EXCEL. This file opens without any problem in LibO

  • 4.0.6
  • 3.6.5 portable version which should be equivalent to your 3.6.5.2

Would an upgrade to 4.0.6 or 4.1.4 be a solutions for you?
