I have installed LibreOffice 3.5.0rc3 replacing 3.4.5. Now I can’t open xlsx-files. I could open them with version 3.4.5. When I’m trying to open the file I get a message “General Error / General input/output error” and when I press the only button “OK” the file isn’t opened.
suggestions to narrow down the problem:
- check the java settings in Tools|Options → LibreOffice → Java (and restart LibreOffice)
if that doesn’t help
- rename your user-profile directory (see http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile for where to find it)
and try again.
I was able to open sample .xslx files in v3.5 (I tried just now), which suggests your problem is specific to either your computer’s configuration or to the files you are using. It may be a bug in LibreOffice, but without more information we’ll not know.
Please can you be more specific about the problem? We will need to know the operating system you’re using (including the hardware type if your platform has any choices of CPU) and we will need a sample .xslx file that fails on your computer but is OK for all of us to test.
So you should come back to old version, submit bug and waiting for 3.5.1…
Tested (under Windows 7) opening a simple Microsoft Excel’s .xlsx files successful using LibreOffcie 3.5. Maybe you can upgrade to 3.5 official release.
3.5.0rc3 is the official release - the last rc is renamed and released as final without any modifications.
I confirm the same issue with some .xlsx files (they could be opened using 3.4.5), while the other files open without any errors. Tested on 2 different PC’s - result is the same.
Do you have a sample file others can try please? I assume from the fact you don’t mention a platform that you are using Windows; is that correct? Which version?

I am having the same issue. The file worked correctly … I shut down my laptop and then it started asking to select the filter to reopen. I’ve tried most of the filters and either get an ‘input/output error’ or the file opens with various characters. I am running Mint 12 and I have tried to open it on a Win7 machine running MS Office 2010.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please email me @ bsheeks@hotmail.com. Thanks.
it might be password protected
i am trying to open a password-protected excel (.xlsx) file in LO 3.5.3.2, and i get the same behavior
I can confirm that still on build 3.6.1.2 I cant open XLSX file created in Report Builder 3.0 [sql 2012] build 11.0.2100.60.
I receive input/output error.
Already tried with newest Java and already recreated new profile.
Nothing helps.
Windows 7 x64, Java 7,0 update 7. i5-2500, 8GB RAM.

Hi, the same happens with version 3.6.2, the last release.
General input/output error. In my case, a reporting tool (birt) generates the xls output. With small files (500 rows) it works fine, but with files larger than 1000 rows, it crashes.
Help please!
Thanks!
I’m having problems with a .xlsx too, using 3.6.2.2 (on Ubuntu 12.10).
I ended up installing gnumeric to open the file. I saved it as an .ods and then was able to open it fine with LibreOffice.
Hi @RedbeardinTC,
Any chance that you could file a bug about this problem and attach a copy of an xlsx file that LO can’t open? Those kinds of files can be VERY helpful in helping us track down compatibility issues. Thanks!
