When pasting an image into Writer, an empty box appears with the words “Image 1”. This only started recently, before that it used to work for years. Even after updating to version 6.3.5.2 the problem persisted.
Have you tried using menu Insert → Image? It seems to work every time. (I don’t use the copy/paste trick much as it sometimes doesn’t behave well.)
Check if View → Images and Charts is selected.
