can't paste into Writer

Hello Everyone,
I am using a new laptop and it came with W10.
My previous laptop had Word and all Microsoft Office facilities.
Not having Office I downloaded Libre Office and am now encountering problems!
I subscribe to Excel Tips and receive a weekly newsletter with details of “How to do>” various things in Excel.
I have been keeping a Word Document with the details and dates of these tips by copying and pasting them onto it.
I transferred the document to Libre Office and it “took on>” Libre Office format.
I am unable to paste the details onto the new Libre Office document.
The pasted text appears two spaces below the text already on the page, and in a ‘box’ which has to be extended with the mouse-pointer.
I cannot ‘drag it’ back by any means and when I try, the text above appears to split and the main part of the text moves to a different line than the date, which were previously on one line.
Apart from the expense of acquiring another version of Microsoft Office, is there an instruction manual available online, or shall I have to keep applying here to our forum for assistance_
Many thanks i/n advance for any advice,
Regards,
Colinito.

Before being allowed to “post” my question I was required to add a “TAG” - I have no idea what tags are about and from the choices I chose “writer” - please forgive any error. C.

Which version (exactly) of LibreOffice?

writer was the good choice because Writer is a competitor to Word.

If your pasted text appears in a redimensionable “box”, then it is not pasted into the main text (sorry for the tautology). A frame was created for it. Please, either edit your question or add a comment to explain the source data format: is it copied from a browser? does it come from another text document? how do you copy it (only the text or also some “decoration” around)?

Provide as many “technical” details you can.

Hello Ajlittoz,

Thank you for your reply.

Excuse my delayed response.

I apologise for my question not being understandable or having incorrectly named certain details. Which Ï do nor really understand. May I now try to explain, not being technical at all, and being well past my sell-by date, I hope my words are understandable.

My new laptop has Libre Office 7.0.1.2 installed.

My old laptop has had M.S. Office 2010 installed for some time, which I cannot transfer to my new laptop.

The Word files transferred to my new laptop visually have the Word format but ‘work’ as if they are Libre Offíce.

I receive weekly updates by email from Excel Tips. These have paragraphs containing a link to details of how to address certain ways to work around an item in Excel. Eg: “Adding leading zeroes to zip codes.”

I open the transferred file in my new laptop and make a space in the text on the page to enable myself to copy and paste – by highlighting the heading required, and right-clicking “copy” then right-clicking “paste” from the email to the space made in readiness in the text in the document.

It then automatically pastes into a “box” which has to be elongated as it is only a certain length, to allow me to type in the date received. It is now two spaces below the text above it in the document, and will not be placed by any means directly below this text as is all the text in the document already.

I also am not able to copy and paste any of the details mentioned as that facility is not available.

I hope this explains the details that you require, and I regret that I do not understand the technological terms that you use.

Regards,

Colin.

I follow the process but I don’t understand what’s happening behind the scene.

The best way to diagnose your problem is:

  • use the edit link under your question to reopen it
  • scroll to the end and type at least two Enter
  • click on the paperclip icon in order to attach a file
  • in the dialog which pops up, press the Browse button and navigate to a problem file, click OK
  • close Save the question

A file can’t be attached to a comment, this is why you must edit your question.

Make the problem file short: a 1-page document is perfect.

Hello Ajlittoz,
Thanks again for your answer,
Trying to follow your instructions to add a comment, but a drop-down informed me that I can only “edit” in a certain time-frame after posting the item!
What I would have entered is that “something” has happened, and all the Word files on my desktop that I previously transferred and which took on Libre Office format, have changed back to Word format and I cannot now use them!
I shall have to obtain assistance now as I work quite a lot from the files that I put on the desktop!
I shall return to thew forum when I have had this problem sorted out and let you know what happened!
Regards,
Colin.

Micro$oft likes to play tricks on your back when Windows is updated. One of their favourites is to reset file/application association so that you are pushed toward M$ apps. I understand your files have extension .docx or .xlsx and now point to Word and Excel. Reconfigure the association between file extension and app (here .docx => LO Writer, …) so that the files open in LO. Being a Linux user, I can’t give the procedure.

Hello Ajlittoz,
Forgive the delay. I am now over 1,000 Kms away from my last location!
After much consideration, I have decided to use the “old” laptop with the partitioned Linux and W10 just for Linux.
I shall not have Linux installed on the new one and shall only use the W10.
I have had Libre Office un-Installed from the new laptop and will continue with only Windows and m/s Office.
My grateful thanks for your advice and assistance.
If I run Into any further problems using my Linux or Libre Office on the other laptop, I Hope I may return for further advice.

Regards.

Colin.

Don’t hesitate to come back for further assistance.

Formally this is not an answer to the initial problem but a decision of yours. It would better belong to a comment. You can use the more link to repost as a comment. After that, close the question with reason “outdated or no longer relevant” which seems the closest available.
