When I edit a formula in a cell and then attempt to move to a different cell in the spreadsheet instead of moving the focus to the new cell Calc just tries to add that new cell address to the formula. How can I prevent that from happening. (New user)
or Tab
.
Just for clarification: To edit a formula (which implies a pre-existence) is not the same as to write a formula.
You can edit a formula with F2
, or with a click in the Input line, or with a double click in the cell.
Yes, there is an existing formula in the cell. When I edit that formula in the formula bar and then click a different cell the original formula tries to add the new cell address into that formula. I realize that I can hit enter or the acceptance check mark next to the formula bar, but the user guide for Calc says you can edit and then click away from the cell to save the edited formula. Based on that I was thinking that I have something set up wrong in my user interface.
What I’m trying to do is what is described in step 4 of the below section copied from the Calc user guide (7.5).
Using the mouse
-
Double-click on the cell to select it and place the cursor in the cell for editing.
-
Reposition the cursor to where you want to start editing the data in the cell.
-
Alternatively, single-click to select the cell, then move the cursor to the Input line on the Formula Bar and click at the position where you want to start editing the data in the cell.
-
When you have finished, click away from the cell to deselect it and the editing changes are saved.
But this section is about editing data, not formulas (CG7402-EnterEditFormatData.pdf p. 23). A clarification about that could help to avoid confusion.
OK, thanks for that insight.
Hit Enter before, or click the green check mark left of the Input Line.
