Changing endnote formatting creates save error

The default footnote/endnote numbering system for LibreOffice 4 seems to be Arabic numerals for footnotes and Roman numberals for endnotes. I use endnotes only and want to change the formatting accordingly, but whenever I try to make Arabic numerals the default for endnotes I can no longer save the file as an odt (though I can in doc format). The rror message I get is “Write Error. Error in writing sub-document styles.xml.” How can I fix this?

I’m using LibreOffice 4.2.6.3 Build ID: 420m0(Build:3) on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

How did you change the numbering? Tools > Footnotes/Endnotes… is the appropriate method. Works as expected here under Debian 7 using v4.2.6.3 so it may be a problem with the Ubuntu-provided variant. Have a look on Launchpad to see if others have reported the same issue.
