Clear formatting vs clear direct formatting

What is the difference between “clear formatting” (in the Set Paragraph Style drop-down list of the Formatting toolbar) and “clear direct formatting” in the Format menu?

There have been several posts about clearing formatting but I have not seen a good explanation of how these commands differ from each other.

The name is misleading, indeed. While “Clear direct formatting” eliminates direct formatting like bold, italic and co. “Clear formatting” is there to reset the paragraph style: by applying that option to any paragraph with any paragraph style applied to it (Heading 1, for example, or Quotation) the paragraph style will be set as “text body”.

Thank you. This is helpful.

I just made a shortcut key to change the character style to default–seems like that should come with the program.
