Context Menu Changes

Hello:

I have a question about context menus, but first things first:

  1. LibreOffice ver: 24.8.4.2 x_64
  2. Windows ver: Windows 11 Home 22631.4751

Here is what I want to achieve, but I can’t figure out if it is possible:

When in Writer, with the cursor in the document (as if typing) I want to add something like the following to the context menu :

á
é
í
ó
ú
ü
ñ
Lorem Ipsum
Some other text I dream up

So that whatever I select is inserted at the current cursor position. I don’t care about styling at all, just the characters/string. The idea here is to add common things I use all the time (mostly letters with diacritics) with as few keystrokes a possible. I know you can invoke Insert > Special Character to pull this off or conversely fiddle with the keyboard/dead key settings. However, I was looking to avoid a step and just drop in the letter I needed. This also would work for any strings I might find useful too.

I can see where you can add this or that menu/function/etc. to the context menu, but I saw no option (that I recognize anyway) to simply insert a string.

So… is this possible, or am I just dreaming here?

TIA;
Ken

Instead of creating a context menu, have you tried AutoCorrect or AutoText?

You can add a custom AutoCorrect so that whenever a sequence of characters is detected, it is replaced by a string of your choice. No need to leave the keyboard.

AutoText is slightly different: you type a specific sequence (“the” shortcut) then F3 to insert what the shortcut stands for. This can be a very complex “object”, even with styling and formatting.

If you care only for character with diacritics, learn where the deadkeys (the diacritics) are on your keyboard. Type the diacritic first, then the base character.

Add the International keyboard (INTL) then adding ü is as simple as pressing " then u. It does mean that if you want a double quote, then you have to press " then Space. To switch through the keyboards, say to go to US Qwerty, holdWin and press Space until you see the one you want in the pop-up menu from the taskbar.

There is a handy list at answers.microsoft Access US International Keyboard in Windows 10
.
Lorem Ipsum is already available, type lorem and press F3 (possibly Fn+F3 depending on manufacturer’s whimsy)

Thanks all for the replies. Turns out I am just dreaming. Fair enough.

Just as a side note, the genesis of this question was the fact that I am in the process of moving from Windows to Linux and I was loath to learn another standard for deadkeys/diacritics. However, after some research (not to mention trial and error) I am pleasantly surprised to see that Linux had made this rather painless. Soon as I have the keyboard mapping memorized all is well.

The context menu was just my way of being lazy. You can see how well that worked

Thanks again!
