In spreadsheet I type name of month and year on top line. When I go to second line to enter exact date, it switches the month to a numerical value and adds the first of the month and the year. How can I get it to leave what I type alone?

A spreadsheet is handled by Calc. So why did you tag Writer? This triggered a false alarm on my question monitoring.
Set this first cell number format to Text.
EDIT: Or type an apostrophe before entering the text (e.g. 'June-2021).
