Creating a link that opens an image?

Hello all! I just wrote a novel that i am turning into an eBook.

I’m going to be adding illustrations to my eBook but I don’t want to clutter up the format by just breaking the page and throwing an image in. Is there a way for me to highlight a section of text and make it a sort of hyperlink that opens an image for the reader? And is there a way to do this without it being a web based hyperlink? Meaning all of the data and images are kept within the file itself?

@Alex has exposed the way to do what you ask. But if you want to hear an opinion, writer has the needed options to set up properly the images in the text, I think with a visually better result. IMO doing a couple of test file with both ways and compare the results would be a well invested time.

The following is trivial to accomplish:-

1. Place the image within a frame on a page somewhere within the eBook
2. Give the frame a memorable name
3. Highlight the text that will be the link
4. Click on the Hyperlink button
   (alternative): Ctrl+K
5. Click on Document (LHS frame)
6. In the Dialog, click on the (+) next to Frames & double-click the Frame created earlier
7. Press OK until back in the Document.

You now have a link to the image. However, what it will NOT do is popup at the point where you clicked. You would need some programming to do that + I would expect you to need the image to be stored externally.
