How do I deactivate the cross barby (croix barbee) in Writer? It is on and I can’t find how to get rid of it. I can’t do anything else while it is on.

I assume you have picture/drawing/object under your text. Click outside the margins to deselect the object.
If you want an image as background then click Format > Page Style and in the dialog that opens select the tab Area, click on the button Bitmap and then the button Add/Import to import you image. Custom size/scale it to suit. It won’t then get accidentally selected. Cheers, Al
