Data error - Data could not be read from file

I have a new PC, MSI with Window 11. It came with Windows 365 installed but I did not realise that till later.
When I tried to open an ods file Excel popped up and wanted me to subscribe. So I declined and Libre Office opened the file as per normal. However I noticed that all my calc files had a little Excel icon preceeding the name.
Later I opened an ods file, Excel intruded, and after that whenever I try to open that file I get the error message that heads this topic. I even tried to get Excel to open it but that failed also, but with a different message.
I have now removed/uninstalled all MS 365 including Excel. All those little icons have now gone. But the trashed file still gives the "Data error , " message.

Any suggestions. It’s a lot of work to recreate the trashed file.

First, make TWO copies of the file. Keep one copy secured and untouched. Check the size of the file in Explorer: if it is very low, I am afraid that your file may have been corrupted. Try opening the other copy with LibreOffice Calc, using the menu File Open.
Other idea: rename the second copy with .zip extension, then open the zip file and look at the file content.xml with Notepad. Does it contain some of your data (use Find to search the file).

Hi Steph

Thanks for your quick reply.

However I cannot even copy the file (which is still as big as it was)
See attached.

Over to you

It seems Windows does this from time to time. Usually this shows Excel was registered to handle .ods-Files. The good news: Usually this doesn’t change the file.

You removed Excel, but this will not restore the handler for .ods-files. This you can do by yourself: Click on a .ods-file with the right mouse button to open the context-menu and select “open-with”. Usually LibreOffice Calc should be in the shown list of possibilities, but sometimes you need to click on “More apps” or even have to browse for LibreOffice.bin in your programs folder.
.
You can make the selection of LibreOffice to handle this type of files (.ods) permanent with checkbox “always open with this app”
.
But: If you can’t copy the file something else seems to block access. My best guess is the security-system, from anti-virus to app/folder-protection. Maybe check their logs.
Other idea: Is the file on a remote drive/ in the cloud? This may limit access/availability…

Hi Wanderer

btw I have Steph1 also trying to help.

Thanks robleyd

Tried that; but Win 11 says it’s up to date. No option to update again.

Did you look at e.g. https://www.thewindowsclub.com/cannot-delete-file-error-0x80070570 or https://www.makeuseof.com/file-directory-corrupted-error-0x80070570-windows-11/ which both seem related to file or directory corruption?

I ran chkdsk which said it had found a few problems. It took over an hour to run. Once finished I tried to open the corrupt file, Libre office seemed to be working then claimed the file was corrupted. Shou it fix it?I keyed yes.The result was a completly blank spread sheet Just a blank sheet1 I noticed that the file has now shrunk from around 1200 KB to 512KB.

So a warning to all Libre Office users. If you get a new computer make sure everything is backed up first, then delete MS 365 before anything.

Warning to all computer users. Run a backup program with some external drive on a daily basis. A backup program saves every new version of every file in your home directory and settings of all programs including the operating system.
If your computer has fallen into the bath tub, all you need is a computer with a similar operating system and your backup medium in order to restore most of your personal settings and all of your personal files.

And no, it makes no sense to delete any other program for LibreOffice.
