Database and Java Runtime Environment

This is almost certainly not a new problem, but I haven’t been able to find a solution. My basic problem is that I don’t have a clue what JRE actually does, or why Libre Office needs it at all, so I would welcome any advice suitable for the ‘fairly intelligent but totally ignorant’ user!

I have built a quite simple Libre Office database (names, addresses, tel nos etc) on my desktop, under Windows 10. I have used a USB stick to transfer it to my laptop, also running Windows 10. It fails to run, telling me I have an out-of-date version of JRE.

I have of course made sure I have the most current version of Java on my laptop, but it makes no difference. Perhaps it is installed in the ‘wrong’ folder, ie not where Libre Office is looking for it? Or perhaps there is some other explanation.

Which versions of Java and LibreOffice are installed on your laptop?

Java is V8, update 45. Libre Office

Are they both 64 bit or both 32 bit. For LibreOffice in Help, About, the 64 bit shows “(x64)”. For Java in windows Programs & Features 64 bit shows “(64-bit)”. You might also try a more recent version of Java, I have V8 update 101.

8u112 was released just now.

64 bit version of LibreOffice requires 64 bit version of Java and 32 bit version requires 32 bit Java. Its possible your laptop has both 64 bit and 32 bit Java but one of them is still an older revision.

Thanks. It will take me a while to check which of each I have. I know that I downloaded both 32 and 64 Java but am not sure which is running - or is it possible for both to run at once? Told you I was ignorant!

Both 32 and 64 bit Java can be installed.

Mark - my apologies for appearing to ignore you, must have seemed very rude. I have been hospitalised, too ill to even think about switching on PC! I will make a fresh start on this problem soon, but thanks for your help so far
