You system seems well out of date. The kernel (for ubuntu 20.04.3 a Debian derivative) is 5.11.0-38-generic and LO 7.2.2.2.
I would recommend updating your system files initially and then LO to see if that helps.

Thank you, this seems to be a good point and therefore I probably have to ask Debian.

Actually, this setup is their brand new, top-notch which is recently made available!

Debian 10 is running on 4.19.208-1.

is this reference helpful?

Thank you, indeed I have used aptitude to install it.

This also happens in safe mode and I am afraid that the logs are not revealing the problem.

ah well, it was worth a shot. Another reference to consider about keeping Debian up-to-date. Also this reference from LO themselves which references Debian 11. You might wish to subscribe…

Thank you! There are no updates pending, so that part is OK.

I also posted in unix.stackexchange (ask Ubuntu redirected me there) in case it is something more complicated they are aware of.

a final suggestion for you then from me. Have you considered creating a bootable USB (or DVD) of say ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS and then selecting the Try Ubuntu option from a live session (ie not completely installing ubuntu) to see if LO works that way? I’ve just done that with ubuntu 21.10 (LO 7.2.1.2 comes with the iso) and it works fine on my system. You can get the iso here. This will not change your system as it currently stands but will allow you to investigate further in order to establish possible options. BurnCD in Debian

Indeed, that is a very good idea.

I will first do it with Debian to make sure that I did not break something during my setup and then also try Ubuntu.

Thank you, this is so brilliant!

I have updated my answer with the result of the strace command.

Debian Live works OK!

apt purge libreoffice* # (The asterisk is crucial)
apt autoremove
apt install libreoffice

A completely new environment of libreoffice emerged and works.
