Dictionary Definitions while writing

This is probably a feature request, I don’t think it exists, but I could be wrong.

When I’m writing a document (for me its mostly creative writing) I find it very useful to have dictionary definitions & spellings at hand.
Previously I was using Google Docs but I want to get away from Google & LO is better in most respects.

A convenience that I painfully miss is to be able to right-click “define” on a word to check the context is appropriate.
I don’t mind using an online dictionary or thesaurus, when I really need to dig into finding the perfect word - but for common use just having an at-hand reference to a word is so useful when writing.

It would be great if there was a sidebar tab that had the definition of the currently selected word, or if that tab could be shown when right-clicking “define”

Any thoughts on this?

There is a thesaurus, see Thesaurus

And you can turn on automatic spell check if it isn’t on already

Auto-spell check works, but Thesaurus is greyed out, i never figured out why.

From Help: " A thesaurus library may not be available for all installed languages. You can install languages with a thesaurus library from the Extensions web page."

[Edit]

  • Click Tools > Options > Languages and Locales > Writing Aids and check that MyThes Thesaurus is ticked. With it selected, click Edit and make sure that Thesaurus is ticked / available for your language.
  • I think the English (USA) dictionary was well behind the other English dictionaries in terms of development although that is changing now. Try downloading the latest English dictionary and installing it as an extension, you could do it from the dialogue above

On Linux, for a thesaurus, I installed mythes-en and libmythes from the distribution’s repository. They also have packages for a dictionary - hunspell.

My favorite language website currently is https://www.wordhippo.com/. I just keep a browser open.

Thanks, I installed mythes-en (the lib was already installed) - that worked.
