I had done a fresh install of Linux and Libreoffice 24 (Included in install)
I could not get the British English dictionary installed through the toolbar and usual instructions through Writer.
Eventually stumbled across solution.
Open “Libreoffice” from Menu, the Grey Icon (Not Writer). This pops up with Recent documents and option to open Writer, Calc, Impress etc.
At the bottom left of the screen are Help and Extensions buttons.
Using the Extensions button I found the English language pack and this worked.
Relaunching Libreoffice find
Tools>Options>Languages & Locales>General>Default Languages for Documents
There will be ab and tick if there is a Dictionary available.
