Document from recent document list won't open

My recent document appears but will not open. It was last saved on 1/1/2021. The file extension now says:/Users/*************/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/.Trash/Account Comparison does not exist.

I’m using macOS Big Sur Version 11.1

[Edit - Opaque] Shortened title and moved original title into details

My recent document appears

This doesn’t mean anything. The thumbnail is being created on last save of a document. If the documents gets deleted afterwards, the thumbnail in the recent documents list still appears as long as

  • you do not delete manually –or
  • you don’t have edited and saved more than 25 (default value) different documents since then

Use Finder to assure yourself that the file doesn’t exist on the location /Users/*************/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/.Trash/ (and the .Trash makes me assume that you deleted it, opened from the trash and afterwards some macOS cleanup process or you emptied trash).

The document does not appear in finder or trash. Finder does show an old version of the document from about 1.5 years ago. Trash has not been emptied recently and there is no sign of the document. I’m completely confused.

Moral of the story is for files that you want to keep, don’t store them in the trash

And do not store them in a cloud. You should own your data.

I obviously wasn’t very clear when I asked the question. I saved and closed the file exactly the same way I had in the past. It was saved in Libreoffice to my local hard drive. I never attempted to delete the file or move it to trash. The extension above is attached to the file now. When I saved it had the normal .ods extension. No worries, I’ve already rebuilt the file.
