I’ve read the other similar posts, but I cannot start the program in safe mode because it freezes at the Recovery Message. If I select and recover the file, the same happens on every file opening.
Must I uninstall and reinstall?
WBS
Hi,
I would proceed as follows:
- Search and delete every lock-file in your working space and LO’s user profile (location: see next step). Search for .~lock.loremipsum.odt#. Lock files usually are hidden files.
If there is no effect go to next step:
- Rename LO’s user profile - so LO will generate a native profile (custom settings will be erased) and start LO again. Be aware that LO’s quickstart is disabled. (See also: LibreOffice user profile - The Document Foundation Wiki)
In most cases a re-installation of LO is not necessary.
Cheers
Thanks for the reply.
I found no lock files.
I drilled down to C>user>appdata>roaming>libreoffice>4 to find several files. At that point I do not know which file or folder to rename in order to generate a new user profile. There are several files in that folder.
BTW, I believe that even if I uninstall and reinstall, the user profile will not be created anew.l It that correct?
Shutdown LibreOffice in case of running.
.
Rename folder this way (or similar):
Before: C>user>appdata>roaming>libreoffice>4
After: C>user>appdata>roaming>libreofficebak>4
.
Start LibreOffice from anew.

From the path given I assume you are in Windows, you could try clicking Win+R to open a command prompt. In it type
"C:\Program Files\LibreOffice\program\soffice.exe" --norestore
and press Enter. If it is just a corrupted restore then LibreOffice should open normally ignoring any attempt to recover the file(s).
If LibreOffice still does not open correctly then you could rename the user folder.
- Close Libreoffice if open.
- In C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\LibreOffice\4 the folder you need to rename is User; for ease of reference rename it something like User2023-11-06
- Start LibreOffice as normal and wait for it to finish loading, including creating a new User folder.
- Close LibreOffice
- Copy the relevant folders from User2023-11-06 to the new User folder to overwrite the newly created ones.
Grantler,
Thanks for the help. A new profile folder was generated, and I’m able to open files now.
I am still getting a little odd result when the files open, but I can use the app now.
