Dots on letters/ characters

how can i type one or two dots on letters / characters?
thanks

Do you mean the accentual characters, like the Hungarian ö, ü, Ö, Ü?

You can insert these special characters (which exist in the Unicode table, and in the actually applied Font) into a document by usage:

  • a localised keyboard, and localized settings
  • the Insert - Special characters menu item
  • the Autocorrect feature
  • the Unicode value directly from the keyboard
  • a custom macro
  • the diacritic marks

More exactly: combining diacritical marks (availability depends on the font).

after typing your character type 0307 for one dot above it , or 0308 for two dots above it and then hold ALT+X . the dots will go there.

If your goal is to “synthesize” mathematical symbols in text (first or second derivative), adding combining diacritical marks may not give the expected result (or rather not a “nice” look) because you end up with a “letter”, the glyph of which may receive shape transformations to be consistent with the general appearance of the font, such as slanting or shifting.

To make sure the “operation” represented by the dot(s) is visually preserved, I would go into inserting a small formula object reduced to the variable/function name decorated with an operation taken in the Attributes element menu.

This may seem a hassle but it gives your document a “professional” look, ensuring full consistency with the explicit formulas.

hi . thanks dear ajlittoz. your solution is awesome. i converted most of my equations from text to math formula and i also learned that:
type "dot " before a letter or character results in one dot above it and type "ddot " before it results in two dots above it.
and as you mentioned it looks really better visually.
it seems a nice way to type first and second derivatives.
thank you for your valuable helps :bouquet:
