Downloaded - how to install?

I just downloaded LibreOffice5.2.4 Win_x86, the .msi file won’t install/open. I get an hourglass then nothing…

It should work like you did it. Try to restart your PC and do it again and check if you have Windows Update waiting to be installed. They can sometimes block normal operation.

Worst case delete the .MSI file and download it again.

I did delete and downloaded a second time with the same results. As far as I can tell, there’s no Windows Update waiting. How do you tell in WinXP?

WinXP support ended ages ago. No more updates.

Again, I would suggest downloading via Torrent. It has built in integrity checking for the file it is downloading. If you don’t have a torrent client on your system download Tixati. If you download the portable version it won’t install anything to your system - though if you want to load a torrent file then you will need to drag it into Tixati’s GUI

Go back to the download page and for the download offered click on the “Info” link (just below the big download button). Then you will be taken to a page that will show SHA-256, SHA-1 and MD5 checksum hash numbers that you can use to check the integrity of the .msi file you downloaded. To easily copy the hash click on the hash title you want and you will get a page where it is easy to copy the hash value.

Another option, if you’re not sure on using checksum hashes, is to download as a torrent. Torrent clients have their own checking functions for a file built in, so little chance of getting a dud download. Usually when I download I use the torrent route as the download goes much faster than the direct download route.

EDIT – HOW TO VERIFY A DOWNLOADED FILE USING CHECKSUMS

You need a separate utility to check the checksum. This is the one I use: MD5 & SHA Checksum Utility (The free edition is sufficient for your needs.) Download it and run it - it is fully portable so won’t install anything to your system. To use do the following:

  1. Launch the Checksum Utility.

  2. Drag the .msi file you downloaded into the File box in the Checksum Utility.

  3. The Utility will calculate the checksum value for that file according to what boxes you have ticked in the Utility; MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-512

  4. Go to the LibreOffice download page and copy one of the official checksum numbers for the file you downloaded. Of the checksums that LibreOffice offers SHA-256 is the most secure to use. VERY IMPORTANT: When copying the checksum number be absolutely sure that you copy only the number, do not copy any spaces, they are not part of the number.

  5. Paste the checksum number you copied into the Checksum Utility Hash box. Click the Verify button

  6. The Utility will now tell you if the checksum number you had the Utility calculate matches the official LibreOffice checksum number.

  7. It the numbers match then the downloaded file is okay. If the numbers do not match then the downloaded file is corrupt.

I found the hash numbers from info, but I’ve no idea how to use that checksum to check the .msi file, sorry.
