Drag/drop from Windows into Writer?

Win 10, 64b
LibreOffice 7.5.3.2

I’d like to open files by dragging them (a variety of types, all of which open in Writer), one at a time, from Windows Explorer into a LibreOffice Writer window, and can’t figure out how. Work flow: open, examine, (close) OR (save as RTF) OR (edit and save as RTF) OR (close and delete).

I open Writer, and get a blank document rather than an empty Writer window. If I drag a file into the document space, I get a package within the untitled document. If I drag a file onto the title bar, it spawns a new window and leaves the untitled document window. If I close the untitled document, the Writer window closes.

Am I missing a trick, or is it just not possible to open new documents in an existing window without using the file menu?

Do not open Writer; open LibreOffice (its start center), and drag there. Never understood people who insist on opening Writer (an empty document), when they don’t need that empty document.
Or drag to the window title.
Or drag to its desktop shortcut.

The “usual” method is to double-click (default handler) or right-cick (use a proglem not set as default via “open with”).
.
Your method can work to integrate elements like images into documents. Of course: You can create your own fork with different user-interface, if you are a developer with time…

Dropping anywhere - Titlebar (calc, writer, math) opens csv in Calc. How do I open them in Writer?

Opening Writer doesn’t imply opening an empty document, it just does so. To me that appears to be a flaw in Writer, whether bug or bad design decision or setting I haven’t found yet. Most apps have File/New for that purpose, and an optional ‘close application when last document is closed’, rather than a forced close.

Dragging to a Writer window title doesn’t open the document in that window, as I’d expect, it leaves an untitled document there and opens a NEW window with the new document. And that window is LibreOffice’s default for that file type, not necessarily Writer.

“Open With” required me to navigate to Writer in Program Files. It will now work for a while.

I’ve finished the project, and would like to close this with no solution. There doesn’t seem to be a way to force drag and drop to open the desired app…

Oh, so this is the first time “csv” appeared in the discussion. Before that, there was this:

I naively assumed, that this meant “file types that naturally open in Writer”. Poor description is a sure way to incomplete / inapplicable suggestions.

The “use desktop shortcut with --writer command line argument, and drag onto that” would possibly work for CSV, too. But I haven’t tested.
