Edit comment disbled

Version 7.1.3.2 on Ubuntu

I’ve got a spreadsheet where I want to edit the comment and I’ve followed all the instruction on how to do this.

However when I have the button to edit the comment the button is disabled. I just can’t edit the comments.

What could be preventing the “Edit Comments” button from being enabled?

I’ve got a spreadsheet…

In which file format?

…I’ve followed all the instruction…

Which?

ods file extension.

When I google I’ve found instructions to get through the menu’s to find the “edit comment” button.

I’ve also found instruction to add the “Edit comment” button to the menu’s, I’ve also followed these instructions.

Regardless of how I get to see the “Edit Comment” button it’s always disabled.

When I google I’ve found instructions to get through the menu’s to find the “edit comment” button.

Right Click the cell having the comment -> Edit Comment (or CTRL+ALT+C while having selecte the cell with comment) - that’s the way to do it.

If the context menu does **not** exist, then check whether your sheet is protected (`Tools -> [x] Protect Sheet...`)

Doesn’t work, that’s why I Googled.

It doesn’t matter what I do the “edit comment” button is either missing or disabled.

In other spreadsheets it works fine but not in the particular spreadsheet I want to edit.

So what could be wrong with this spreadsheet?

Upload the spreadsheet - remove all private date and just leave the comment(s). Edit your question and use the paper clip symbol to upload a file. Please do not use “Add Answer”, since answers are reserved to solutions.

> So what could be wrong with this spreadsheet?

As already stated: It might be protected.

The comment can be edited only if the column (not the cell) is expanded to show all cell contents and only if you right-click directly on the tiny little comment triangle in the upper right corner of the cell. If the contents extend beyond the column width, you will not have the ability to Show/Edit/Delete Comment. That is, the context menu will not include the appropriate actions.
I found this out only by experimenting, so it is either a bug in Calc or these instructions are missing from the documentation.
I’m using Ubuntu 24.04 with LibreOffice (Calc) 24.8.7.2.

Is there a reason for the escalating energy demand of the global networks?

Yes. I know for sure, that too often, verbal communication is broken by design - because words mean different things for different people; and often, seeing a picture (or a screencast), it is very easy for the other side to either see their own mistake, or to point to my mistake / difference in steps, where otherwise, it would take days / weeks … and time is much more valuable resource than increased energy demand (which is itself questionable, because needs serious comparison of this increase to the potential increase caused by miscommunication).

In my currently most recent version (25.2.2.2), but also in your very old version 7.1.3.2 which I also could test (32-bit), the button (showing the tooltip “Insert Coment”) you talked of seems to be enabled by default - and works for me.
However, for cells already containing a comment (annotation) it’s automatically disabled.
However, the default shortcut Ctrl+Alt+C will create a new commenmt if appropriate, but also open an existing one for editing.
(This isn’t shown easily by an image. And the difference between enabled and disabled icon isn’t striking in this case.)

BTW: The comment marker was hardly recognised in old versions in sheets at low zoom. Recent versions allow an “expert setting” to get a more eye-catching sign.

A few additional tests showed me that the icon Edit Comment (which I never had noticed or even inserted into the toolbar until today) seems to be permanently disabled even if a cell with comment is selected. This is a bug.
Simply use Ctrl+Alt+C for “insert” and for “edit” as well.
