I have a data series from 1970 to 2004, but the intervals are irregular. So there is one value for 1973, but none for 1974 and two for 1975, one for 1976, ect. My chart now looks very cluttered with tons of labels on the x-axis.
I want to include all the values in the line chart, but I don’t want the have all years as labels in the x-axis. Is there any way to do this? Can I choose which x-values show up on the axis?

you probably don’t want a line-chart, but a x/y chart with the style set to show lines instead of individual dots.That way the dates get properly spaced into time, and not spaced evenly as would be the case with a line-chart.
I have been playing around with the x/y chart, but had no success. The line chart picks automatically the years as labels for the x-axis, but the x/y chart shows up with identical horizontal and vertical axis unrelated to my data.
Also, the problems with the line chart was not that the years were not properly spaced into time, but that too many years leads to too many labels, so a cluttered axis.
You should choose a Chart Type - Format > XY scatter. It will allow you to format the increments on each axis as you want to. Right click X or Y axis and Format Axis > Scale.
