Error message when opening excel spreadsheet "not enough columns"

Have a excel spreadsheet developed on excel that LibreCalc cannot open because of too few columns. Solution?

Opening 18_1040.xlsx produces maximum number of columns per sheet was exceeded

Calc fills a maximum of 1024 columns.
