… and what is your question, which you assume could be answered by other users of LibreOffice? If an extension does not work, you need to turn to the developer of the respective extension. LibreOffice extension page states for this extension:

Issues
Please report any issues here:
https://gitlab.com/lo_extensions/lo-page-numbering/issues

I get the same error message when I try to use the extension in LibreOffice. On the download page It says “works with newest versions of LO and OpenOffice”, so I tried with OpenOffice also. There I do not even get the menu item.

I also see that nothing has changed in the plugin since a year ago, so it may be a dead project. Try to contact the developer, but if there is no response there, ask your question here in full: Describe the issue you are having and what you are trying to achieve. That should enable us to suggest a workaround.

While page numbering requires a couple more steps in Writer than in some other popular word processing apps, it is not really difficult to do it with only basic Writer setup, without any helper plugin.

That said, there may be specialized pagination setups which require a bit of fiddling. We generally enjoy the odd fiddling. Guessing is not so much fun.

Help us to help you!

Thanks for your reply Keme. I think you are right, the plugin may no longer be supported.
What I am trying to do is add page numbers, that have severel starting points, e.g natural pages from 1-5 will be numbered 1-5, but then I want page 6 to start at 1 again. And if I can i’d like some of the page numbers to be roman numerals… can this be done?

Certainly! Depending on your needs, the answers to a few questions may be relevant, like :

Is the pattern 1-5 consistent? If so, it can be automated.

Does the content “flow” uninterrupted across the “broken” page sequence, or does page 6 (new 1) start a new section of your document?

In other words: Why? What is it in your document that dictates a restart of numbering?

What kind of document is this? How will it be used? (By you only, advertising, teaching ; on screen, printed)

Note that even/odd pages correspond to left/right side in a two-page spread. When you make an even (#6) page into an odd (#1) page, formatting engines will want to insert a blank page in between. This can be circumvented, but may fail if your document is intended for export to other formats.
