I have my essay on my desktop because a couple days ago I was working on it. Now when I go to double click on the file to open it, I get the loading circle (I have windows vista) and then nothing happens. At all. And I really need to finish this as soon as possible and I cant re download it.

It’s possibly a file association problem. Try opening the file from within LibreOffice (open LO Writer, then use LO’s menu to open the file).
Did you try the following:
Selected the icon on your desktop - push ENTER/
What happens?
Did you once reboot your PC?
Which version of LibO are you using?
