For many years, I have been missing a powerful Document Compare functionality, at least in Writer, that can match the performance of, say, Microsoft Word.
Or it could at least match the performance of other software like ‘meld’.
The current ‘compare’ feature is embarrassingly underpowered.
There is an ‘xml compare’ extension which does much better but only compares XML format files on disk, creating its highlighted output in yet another file.
What is needed is a ‘compare’ command that takes the current document (in memory) and compares it to any other valid writer document on disk, and presents the result as tracked changes in a new document (in memory).
That is what most users would expect from a ‘compare’ function.
