Editing text with nonprinting characters displayed is useful. However, having nonprinting characters the same colour as the text is distracting. It would be helpful if nonprinting characters were displayed in light gray, light cyan or a user-selectable color.
In my Windows version 4.3.2. they are cyan or a similar shade of light blue.
