File has gone missing in Libreoffice

Hi,

I am running 6.4.4.2 on OS X 13.2.1

Feels strange writing this but one of my files has disappeared. I had been working on it for a week, saved in on numerous occasions etc. I can see a visual representation of it when i launch Libreoffice but can also see that the path assigned to it is in private/var/etc. But when i click on it, I am informed that the file does not exist.

The file was in my documents folder, but is no longer there. Obviously I have searched the machine and there is nothing to be found under its file name.

I make weekly backups but almost all the work on this document has taken place since the last backup. Is there any other folder I can search for a copy? I have already looked in Library/AppSupport/Libreoffice and although i find some other files there, there is no sign of the one I’m looking for.

Does Libreoffice have some funky way of saving files that can lead to overwrites on quit or something similar?

Any suggestions welcome,

Ros

Try:

Backup Kopie

Simply no. All programs may loose unsaved contents of files when program or os hangs and systems is restarted by reset-button or after loss of power. If this happens during save it is also possible to corrupt a file, so it can’t be opened.
.
But in your case the file is not found at the place where it was, and this is not typical for errors on the side of the program. And as you usually can neither delete nor move an open file it hints to search for a cause after LibreOffice closed the file.
.

You should consider to improve your backup system and adapt to work. I often simply generate an additional zip-file with the important/renewed contents of a folder before and/or after doing mayor work.

I don’t know for Mac but if Windows closes suddenly and there isn’t enough time time for LibreOffice to shut down cleanly then it leaves temporary files behind. In Windows they are in folders beginning with lu for each file and are located in temporary directory. If you copy the largest file in the folder to another location then you can open LibreOffice, navigate to the copied file and can normally open it.
Your Temporary Files path is shown in LibreOffice > Preferences > LibreOffice > Paths

Maybe it works differently in Mac or maybe it is worth looking.

Thanks for the suggestion, I had already found the lu… files in Library/Appsupport/Libreoffice but the missing file is not there.

I can only assume that corruption of the type that you describe occurred during a quit/restart. I very rarely delete files and never do so from the directory in which the original was stored. It’s funny, I’m used to reading help requests where I am certain that the problem arises from user’s own error, which is exactly what i would think were I to stumble across this post!

As regards changing my practice re backups - point taken. I’ve moved past bitterness at my loss, and into behavioural modification
