Filter dialogue box too big: off screen

The filter dialogue box appears at different sizes, for reasons I can’t locate.

Often the “OK” button is offscreen, which makes the dialogue box useless.

Is this intended behaviour? Are there settings or procedures I’m missing?

Pictured: filter dialogue for filter penultimateWord. All options on the filter comfortably fit on the screen, so that appears not to be the reason.

Thanks.

Try to resize the Formula editor box. Try to resize the row 3.

And please upload an ODF type sample file here. Or check the cell contents in rows of the actually filtered coumn: the width of the Filter List depends on the widest cell content of the filtered range.

Thanks: these both make it less likely the filter dialogue will overflow off the bottom of the screen.

The bigger problem is when it overflows the right-hand edge.

That’s what I would have assumed, but it seems not to be the case. In the example attached, the longest string is 23 chars (see col. G), but the filter box must be 5-6 times that length.

The visible columns are A-P at zoom 75% on your attachment.

And the visible columns are A-AA on my PC at zoom 75%. I have a 1920x1080 pixel resolution screen.

Check the resolution of your srceen: maybe that is set lower than the native resolution. Or maybe the native resolution is too low.

It looks like you have 1280x800 screen which is minimum requirement.
LO 6.4.7.2 had fixed width filter

There were quite a lot of changes to filters since 6.4.7.2. It might have been deliberate as it was difficult to select the correct item if the first 22 letters or so were the same.
Maybe best to file an enhancement bug for adjustable width filter dialogues, How to Report Bugs in LibreOffice - The Document Foundation Wiki

Any suggestions how the width of the filter box is currently determined, in case I can bodge something in the meantime? It seems random (not that anything is). And certainly not determined by the width of the longest item in the column filtered.

I can’t help with the internals of LibreOffice, maybe ask in the bug report.
It would be helpful if you could link the bug report here, precede the bug number with tdf# to create the link.

Thanks. I’ve never submitted a bug report. Does this draft look ok?

Action: click on dropdown arrow to filter
Response: dialogue box opens that is much wider than the items in the filter
Problem: on smaller screens, the [OK] button on the dialog box is off-screen

Could we please have a dialog box that

  1. is never wider than the items in the filter list
  2. can be set always to be narrow (for people with smaller screens)

Why not say 1280 x 800 as example?
Note that you can right click in the selection pane and click Remove row until the height is reduced sufficiently to see the OK button.
.
I thought the issue was the width, where some parts weren’t easily accessible such as Filter by condition. This what you are asking to be changed in your numbered list.
.
Don’t forget to add your system details from the Help > About LibreOffice dialogue, click on icon to right of Version information to copy details to clipboard.

Better to add the example file as well as link to question

Yes, “off-screen” is off-screen on the right-hand side, and therefore not mitigable by reducing formula box, row height, remove row, etc.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll try to make this clearer.
