Fonts too bold after upgrading from LO 7.4 to 7.5

Hi,
after upgrading from libreoffice 7.4.3.2 to 7.5.4.1 (packages provided by opensuse 15.4) all fonts suddenly look way bolder. The following is “Liberation Sans” in 13pt, the upper line is in 7.4, the lower in 7.5.

libreoffice_fonts

This really makes it hard to read most of my calc documents. Other programs like Gimp still show the fonts as normal and as LO 7.4 did.

I haven’t found a hint or other posting anywhere explaining this. Does anyone have an idea what happened and why LO is showing all the fonts so much bolder as before?

Thanks a lot!
cu,
Frank

Please edit your question to attach a sample file, and paste the information in Menu/Help/About LibreOffice, there is an icon to copy.

Here is the test file used for the screenshots below.
test.ods (7.8 KB)

As I can only attach one file per post (being a new user) I will have to split my answer in sefveral comments, sorry for that.

The reason for the problem is LO 7.5.6 and later ignoring the FREETYPE_PROPERTIES="truetype:interpreter-version=35" setting. I’ve compared version 7.5.6 and 7.4.7, downloaded from the libreoffice homepage:

Version: 7.4.7.2 / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 723314e595e8007d3cf785c16538505a1c878ca5
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.14; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: de-DE (en_US.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

In this version, my test file looks like this with FREETYPE_PROPERTIES="truetype:interpreter-version=35":
lo_lo_7.4_ft35

and like this with FREETYPE_PROPERTIES="truetype:interpreter-version=40":
lo_lo_7.4_ft40

That’s how it should, the fonts are lighter with interpreter-version=35.

But in LO 7.5:

Version: 7.5.6.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: f654817fb68d6d4600d7d2f6b647e47729f55f15
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.14; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: de-DE (en_US.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

both settings, i.e. interpreter-version=35 and interpreter-version=40 look the same:
lo_lo_7.5_ft35

Thus, libreoffice 7.5 and later no longer respect the interpreter-version=35 setting, and that makes many of the fonts look bolder (and for me, more difficult to read in many of our calc documents we use at work).

I wonder if this is a bug or it was decided to drop support for using the old truetype interpreter?
