Footnote numbering per chapter

LO 24.8.3.2
macOS 12.7.6

I have received a file with many footnotes. They are all numbered consecutively, even though under Tools > Footnote/Endnote Settings > Footnotes, “Counting: Per chapter” is selected.

Each chapter begins with a heading formatted with the paragraph style Heading 2, which I have edited via Outline & List to be “Level 1”.

What else do I need to do for Writer to start footnote numbering per chapter?

I don’t understand how you succeeded in changing Outline level in Heading 2 Outline & List tab of paragraph style. This parameter is normally protected to avoid creating discrepancies with Tools>Heading Numbering where the heading hierarchy (dedicated to TOC) is managed.

The possible explanation is you already changed the default Tools>Heading Numbering configuration, removing Heading n from it. These Heading n then become “ordinary” styles which are no longer related to heading numbering and no longer protected.

The notion of “chapter” is intimately linked to Tools>Heading Numbering when Writer automation is concerned. Consequently, if your Heading 2 is not a member of Heading Numbering, it no longer counts for a chapter break.

It is a shame because there are circumstances where you can have several chapter hierarchies and this means Writer will not recognise chapter in alternate hierarchies.

If your Heading Numbering tweaking is not the cause of the problem (or you did nothing to it), attach a sample file for closer examination.

Thank you. The matter has been resolved, somehow, though I cannot say how. I just noticed that after closing and reopening the file, the footnotes were numbered per chapters. A nice surprise!
