Formating on a spreadsheet when '£ appears in a cell

From time to time although the cell contents on the sheet as £280.00 when I examine the cell it shows '£280.00.

  1. Why and how does this happen?
I try to remove the ’ using Find and Replace but it does not work :unamused:
    2, How do I remove the ’ ?

Where does the data come from? Is it perhaps imported from elsewhere (copy/paste, .csv file) and the option Detect special numbers was not selected?

Many thanks for your speedy response. Yes, imported from .csv without selcting Detect special numbers
I’ve now used Ctrl+H as per the link you gave and this removed the ’ from the cells and they have retained the £ format. I can now sum the column. Thank you very much for your help.
