Fractions in writer

Is there a way to AutoCorrect Fractions in the same way the 1/2, 1/4 and 3/4 are auto corrected in writer? In Example when I write 1/4 it turns to 1/4 character with smaller font. Can it be done for any other fraction?

This may be a use for LO’s Math program. You should investigate it for your intended use.

Hello @ovidius,

In addition to the fractions ½, ¼, and ¾ that you already mentioned in your Question, my LibreOffice version 5.4.1.2 also offers AutoCorrect replacements for the following fractions:

F	KEY
⅓	:1/3:
⅔	:2/3:
⅛	:1/8:
⅜	:3/8:
⅝	:5/8:
⅞	:7/8:

You could add more fractions to the AutoCorrect replacements list, such as the following:
½
↉ ⅓ ⅔
¼ ¾
⅕ ⅖ ⅗ ⅘
⅙ ⅚

⅛ ⅜ ⅝ ⅞

The only way to obtain arbitrary fractions is to use a font with the OpenType table “frac”. For example, with Libertinus Serif you need to use as font name

Libertinus Serif:frac

to obtain

You need to create a character style to use for your fractions. Note that not all fonts support OpenType features, so check the capabilities of your font first.

For more information about OpenType and LibreOffice see my article on OpenSource.com site or stay tuned to my personal blog

Not The Way But A Way – To make a fraction in LibeOffice Writer

(If your fraction is not commonly used and is not in your Tools> Auto Correct> Auto Correct Options> List)

In your document make a fraction -

Insert> Object> Formula> Division (wide slash)> Plug in Numbers> LClk goes back to document

Now adjust the size and position – Double LClk fraction and goes to Formula Edit> Format> Font Size> Change pt size (usually ⅓ of listed size)> LClk gos back to document

Now adjust the position of the fraction – Double LClk fraction> Put cursor on edge of box and when get hand move into position wanted.

Its a clunky dirty procedure but it works…
