Writer loses functionality after typing between 15 and 30 pages. I managed to copy and paste 230 pages into one file by pasting paragraph for paragraph from 24 files. On my second book, I wanted to avoid that hassle, but now seems worse, even with performance increases in tools, options to 256K in memory with 12 Gb in my system. Am I supposed to use multiple files? I have been completely stonewalled at 31 pages.
What is your Operating System and your LibreOffice version?
I have Libre Office 3.5.2 Build on Linux Mint 13 Maya (Mate version)//And thank you for viewing my post. // Dual core amd black edition 6mb cache-12 Gb memory I thought of as sufficient.
I guess I had to figure this problem on my own. For whoever views this, the way I solved the problem was to save numbered files, not exceed 10 to 15 pages. Create a new writer file. Export each numbered file to the same place as a PDF. Copy and Paste each paragraph into the open writer and edit.
Do you use the native file format odt, to save the files?. One thing you can try is reset the user profile: wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile, many times solves strange issues.
I will look into it, thank you very very much. Yes, indeed I do use the native odt. I had a small problem exporting it to a manuscript editor, I had thought of redoing my profile to the MS setting instead, but became frightened at what might happen if I did. I still will check on reset though.
Amendment//I did not even see the profile section there until you sent me. You think that now that I filled it in, some functions will cough up some phlegm? It couldn’t hurt. Anyway, I am going to town on book 2./// Libre is working for me even with hiccups.
Essentially, through trial and error, yours and my solution are the synonymous. Thank you very much for your response, and I have accepted your answer as best. Good writing to you.
For what its worth…on earlier versions of LO (3.1 or so), I was able to copy 230 pages of text from Word to LO with no problems. In the latter versions of LO, there are alot of stability issues / bug deprecation of basic functions, so maybe that is part of the problem. Again, for what its worth (Windows XP, 2GB of RAM, 250GB disk)

When writing a book, I use a Master Document to assemble chapters. The Master Document contains my title page with the page numbering field inserted, but set to -2. What is inserted into the Master Document is as follows:
Chapter 00.odt - Copyright page (page number field set to -1
Chapter 01.odt - First chapter (Footer page numbering starts)
.
.
.
.
Chapter 40.odt - Final chapter
Once it’s assembled, I export to PDF, and all page numbers come out right, and no chapter is over 15 pages (most of my chapters are 6 to 8 pages)
