Grey blocks between words in writer

Part of my Writer doc has grey boxes between words.

an earlier reply said to go to Tools; Options but that doesn’t exist.

Thanks

They might be non-breaking spaces U+00a0, fields, or other special characters. If you don’t want to see the grey (non-printing) just click View > Field shadings to toggle visibility.

Did you read how to ask a question? You have a Mac OS so Options is instead at LibreOffice ▸ Preferences

Cheers, Al

Hi Al,
Thanks that did the trick.

When you asked about How to ask a question, I went back to read that and could NOT find it. Most sites like this do have that and it’s kind of in your face (in a good way), pinned at the top of the board or something. If you can point me to it, I’ll gladly read it.

I’m new to LibreOffice (slightly used OpenOffice before), so I’m starting from scratch. I do have a Mac (10.15.7) and have been long-time Word for Mac user (also a long-time MS Ofc user at work). I am making a definitive effort to switch to Libre at home, since I never liked the Mac version of Ofc, and they don’t “support” my version any more (never got much support from them any way).

Thanks for your answer!

Hi @zippEdodah , I’m happy to hear that the problem is solved.

I couldn’t link to the Ask/GettingStarted as the wiki site went down, presumably for maintenance. Only MacOS doesn’t have settings at Tools > Options.

It is also worth checking out the Guides on the LibreOffice site as they give a more rounded explanation than Help does. The section on Styles is really fundamental to how Writer works; if you get styles correct then formatting is so easy. Cheers, Al

@zippEdodah, Don’t forget to check the mark (Answer markCorrect answer mark) to the left of the answer to show that your question was solved.
