Hello, I've opened an Avery template in Libre and inserted a table. But I need to center the table on the template and am unable to simply drag it to the correct location. How can I move the table where I want it to be on the template? Thanks.

I’m a first time user. Just want to create 4 x 6 recipe cards in English that will print on Avery paper stock designed for this purpose. I know this should be pretty simple. The Avery template 8386 has 2 4x6 rectangles on a standard letter size page. The template works with an actual paper product that is perforated so that postcards, recipes, etc can be created, printed, and separated. The template is similar to a label – it is blank and designed to just position the card in the correct spot on the paper when printed.

I opened the template in Libre and attempted to insert a table which would allow me to easily add the ingredients and other information. But the table when inserted is not aligned with the template and I am unable to drag it to the correct location as I normally would. Is it possible to simply drag a table in this program? (I can delete rows, but can’t drag the table to center it properly on the template). If dragging is not an option, how to align the table properly into the template? Or do I need to take a completely different approach? I’m sorry if this information is identified somewhere, but I was unable to find it. Thank you.

Did you already try to use File -> New -> Labels and select:

Brand Avery Letter Size
Type 5889 Color Laser Postcards (which is compatible to 8386 according to Avery website)

and click button New Document ?

This allows to enter the table into the frames defined for the 2 cards.

**PS** Please try to find a ***short*** descriptive title and put the rest into the details. Thanks in advance.

Typically, templates for Avery stock is made for MS Word. Writer has builtin “wizards” to handle labels and similar sheets where exact placement is important. Cf. Opaque’s comment.

Because of the differences in typographical standards, Word and Writer behave slightly differently in the layout department. This difference is significant when you print to this kind of “special media”.

So, did you use a wizard (from the File - New menu), or did you use a template file?

If the latter, was that file explicitly designated “Writer compatible”?

A table is a special case of “running text” and largely abides by the same rules and settings which apply to paragraphs. It is not an object that can be dragged about easily.

Technically, to answer your question, you can insert a frame, and put your table inside that. A frame can be dragged around the page and anchored like a graphical object. In this case you probably want to remove borders from the frame. Note that the frame approach could get messy (depending on other content, and whether you have a lot of cards to print in one go)

The wizard approach outlined in the comments is usually a better strategy.

Okay, I have used the wizard to convert the word formatted Avery label/template 5889 to Libre and it is on the first page of the document. Used the “File New Label” to insert the converted version.

  1. There appears to be an option to add a table to the label, however it uses a drop down menu and the drop down menu is blank?

  2. I checked “continuous” assuming that would apply the label template to every page, but the label templates still only appear on the first page. Is there a way to apply the label to every page automatically, vs one page at a time?

Thank you in advance.

Thank you all for your help.
