Is there a way to number pages in a document, but hide the numbers when the document is printed (so that they do not print on the page)?

If this question is not related to your other one, the answer is yes.
Either customise the Header or Footer paragraph style (depending on where you put the page number) to add to it the Hidden attribute. This will prevent the whole header/footer from printing.
Or, to be more selective, create a user character style with the Hidden attribute and apply it only on the page number field.
To keep the hidden information on screen, adjust Tools>Options, LibreOffice Writer>View to enable Hidden text and Hidden paragraphs in the Display Fields section.
