Highlight menu instead of checkbox

I’m using Libreoffice fresh on two different devices. On my ubuntu the icon of a menu item highlight on select:

whereas on my arch a checkbox appears instead:

Anyone know how to get the icon highlights to work here too? I’ll point out that on the ubuntu Libreoffice is using gtk2 and on the arch gtk3. The checkboxes give the menu a very cluttered look.

I also started a kde on VBox and the menu items there are also highlighted:

but still I can’t seem the find a way to set it on the arch.
