I have a stacked bar chart with data labels. The patterns in the bars obscure the data labels. Can I give the data labels a background color that will blot out the bar pattern and allow the data to be visible?

Unfortunately it is not possible to set the background color for a data label inside a Calc Graph.
For best readability you could set the “Area” type of the Bar to “Color” or “Gradient”;
To improve readability when the “Area” type of the Bar is set to “Pattern” or “Hatch”, you could set the “Font Effects” to “Outline” and choose a Bold font of sufficient size.

The only workaround I know is to Right-Click▸Format Data Labels each problem labels to set a font color that stands out better on the background. You can also add a more or less thick border…
