I had a power failure whilst using Libra office spreadsheet. On reconnecting I found that I had lost all of my calculations and all of my history.

If LibreOffice didn’t offer you to recover the file upon the first start after the power failure then no. Upon power failure nothing in memory yet unsaved can be saved. You could only restore from a last known good backup.
In future enabling automatically saving recovery information of documents every n minutes might help. See also Preventing data disaster - The Document Foundation Wiki .
