How Can We Optimize LibreOffice Calc for Large Data Sets?

Hello

I am working on a LibreOffice Calc project that involves very large data sets; with thousands of rows and complex formulas. As the file grows; I have noticed that performance drops & even simple operations take longer to complete. :innocent:

I am looking for practical solutions to keep Calc fast and stable; even when handling big volumes of information.

Some ideas I am considering include reducing volatile formulas, using absolute & relative references properly & splitting data into separate sheets. :innocent:While researching tips and examples, I came across a list of Excel Interview questions and realized that many of these could be adapted to test advanced Calc skills in professional scenarios.

Has anyone here successfully implemented advanced techniques to optimize Calc for large-scale use? :thinking:A good starting point is the Official LibreOffice Calc Guide but I am especially interested in your real-world experiences and tricks you use in daily work.

Thank you !! :slightly_smiling_face:

Can you share a sample document?

Sorry I can’t help

we may discuss this on YOUR real-world-Data, but before you should attach at least 500 rows from your project as a …ods -File

LibreOffice comes with tools for database access called “Base”. Everything will be safe, secure, fast and easy to use with a relational database.

It’s quite a bold undertaking to ask such a question after only a few days of membership here and 1 minute of reading time. Then you expect the helpers here to read a highly dubious FAQ page with 41 main entries on Excel-related questions and not list at least 2 of the 3 questions on which you base your judgments. How many minutes might a user trying to help you need to read that stuff, and find (possibly) something useful?

A few more detailed remarks:

  • Improving the efficiency of Calc is an ongoing process. It’s much better e.g. with V25.2 than with V4.1 (if 4.1 has the needed functions and tools at all).
This is done by a staff of developers, many of them volunteers again.
  • Seeing specific needs of the kind there is the bugs site where also specific enhancement requests can be filed.
  • As already @karolus stated, the information you gave about your project is not helpful. A realistic example as .ods is needed.
